Cause and Effect

Knowing is not enough; we must apply. Willing is not enough; we must do.
Johann Wolfgang von Goethe / writer, scientist, philosopher, painter, politician / 1749–1832

As Goethe suggested, it’s important to acquire knowledge; however, that knowledge must be applied or experienced in order for it to be realized. In the same respect, will or motivation is vital, but it must be complemented by proper action for it to become a force in our lives. Such an approach will significantly influence your quality of life; furthermore, actions define one as an individual. As Immanuel Kant, the renowned eighteenth-century philosopher, so eloquently stated, “To be is to do.” Experience is synonymous with life itself. At times, we can learn from the experience of others, which can be quite valuable; for the most part, however, we learn, adapt, and mature through our own personal experience, which is often dictated by our actions. Actions provide results, and each time you act, you gain a new perspective that may not have been achievable otherwise. That perspective is often coupled with increased self-confidence. With that said, the old adage of “Look before you leap” still carries significant weight, as rushing into things can be detrimental at times. Nevertheless, it’s important to remember that life is but a window in time that remains open only so long, so be sure to seize opportunities when they exist.

Although you have the potential to gain insight through any type of action, it’s wise to choose that which is truly beneficial to you and the well-being of others so that you can avoid the inevitable pain and hardship that will otherwise result. This may seem simple enough; however, given the complexities in life, the constant changes we face, and the various influences or pressures that often exist, such choices can be difficult to discern or even implement. If you can focus on the present moment, however, and view things objectively, then you will naturally see things more clearly. Moreover, if you maintain your resolve, view things positively, and remain flexible, then you can act in an unselfish manner, which will help ensure that you make good decisions. It’s often important to think before you act, but don’t delay unnecessarily. Remember, action yields results, defines you as an individual, and provides new insight, so make it a priority in your life.
